DAIRY EMPLOYEES’ WAGES,

EMPLOYERS’ CLAIMS.

COUNTER-CLAIM MADE.

The Arbitration Court yesterday was engaged in hearing a dispute between the Wellington dairy factory workers and their employers. The action was brought by the employersf and the union made a counter-claim.

The employers-* case rests largely on the number of small dairy farms in the district. -These, it is stated, number 4500, and it is alleged that they give a smaller return to the owners than the wage paid to factory employees.

The Government will probably introduce legislation this session to revert to the 48 hour week in the railway service. The law at present provides for the 44 hour week.

The change would render possible savings to the extent of £600,000 annually, and a reduction of 2000 in staff, but retrenchment in this direction is not contemplated. A system of rationing work is being suggested.

In the Police Court this morning the case was adjourned till March 25th to enable the victim to recover sufficiently to give evidence.
