TOWN BOARD MEETING.

GENERAL BUSINESS,

The monthly meeting of the Leamington Town Board was held at the Domain pavilion on Thursday, when there were present: Messrs T. A. Hicks (deputy chairman) in the chair,. A.. EPeppercorn, T. H. Kelly, F. Mack, J. W. Garland, F. ff Pemberton, and the clerk, Mr W. Stopford. j

On account of continued illness the chairman (Mr W. Richmond) was granted leave of abscncev

Survey of District,

In addition to the ordinary meeting minutes were read of a special meeting dejiling with the survey of the district. The Surveyor-General advised that to survey the whole of the remaining part of the district not previously included would cost £SO, making the total cost of the complete survey of the district £ISO. The offer was accepted.

It was reported that the department’s surveyors are at present at work.

Clearing of Cemetery Gully.

Mr D. Ivingdon submitted a tender of £7 10/- for cutting noxious weeds round the young trees in the cemetery gully. In reply to Mr Pemberton, Mr Mack said the tender did. not provide for burning.

The tender was accepted and the matter left in Mr Mack’s hands.

Lease of Section.

Mr W. Hogan waited on the board in connection with the lease of a section, of about an acre, at the bottom of Shakespeare Street, the section be 1 ing near his homestead section.

In reply to Mr Peppercorn Mr Hogan said it was municipal reserve, and he had a lease for 21 years as from December Ist last, and the right of renewal for a further 21 years at a rental of £1 per annum. He requested an indefinite lease.

The board considered that the present conditions under which Mr Hogan had the section wore sufficient, but. promised to consider the request. Heavy Traffic. License Fees. The town clerk, Hamilton Borough Council, wrote enquiring if the board is'prepared to accept the Magistrate’s Order allocating the fees received for the period from March 31, 1929, until May. 31st, 1930, as the basis of apportionment for the 12 months ending May 31st, 1931. The order for the earlier period was: Boroughs to retain 55 per cent of collections; Town Boards 40 per cent.

The board agreed to accept the order.

Mr Hicks: Anyway; we get very little out of it.

Mr Mack: We get the traffic, but little in fees.

Renewal of Lease,

The solicitors for Mr Geo. Floyd wrote asking for a renewal of lease of allotments 7 and 8, containing 7 acres. —Clerk to sec noxious weeds inspector as to the condition of the section. Finance.

The clerk reported a credit balance of £390 5/3, and outstanding rates totalling £7O 3/3. Accounts amounting to £333 17/5 were passed for payment. General. The chairman reported that Mr E. J. Vinall had approached him with the request for a reduction in the rent of the Town Hall for a Church function, but he had been advised that the request could not be entertained. —Action approved. The chairman mentioned that the corner of Wardsworth Street and Shakespeare Street was a bad one for traffic, and needed cutting back.—Left in the hands of the. chairman to arrange with the surfaceman. 5 Cleaning of Drains. It was decided that the clerk call tenders for the cleaning out of the board’s main drains, the showing of the work to be left in the hands of Messrs Hicks and Kelly. The board also discussed the cleaning of the private land on the banks of the drain.

Mr Pemberton thought that the individual land owners should be responsible for the cutting and clearing of weeds on the banks of the drains. Cleaning Reserves.

Mr Hicks brought up the matter of cleaning reserves, including the old bridge site, the area at the back of Mr Porter’s, also at the top of Shakespeake Street,"and the triangle near “Whare Ora.” It was decided to take action at the next meeting. War Trophies.

Mr Hicks mentioned that the Auckland City Council was anxious to get rid of war trophies in the shape of machine-guns and trench mortars, and he thought that the board might apply for one or two to place on - the old soldiers ' graves at the cemtery. It was decided to apply for two trench mortars.

DOMAIN BOARD; The same members then sat as a meeting of the Domain Board. A letter was received, signed by K. Bycroft, requesting the use of the Domain on Saturday (to-day) on behalf of the Methodist Junior. Endeavour. — Granted.. Tlie request of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for the use of the Domain on the 22nd i'nst., was also granted. Finance. The clerk reported a credit balance of £175 6/5. Accounts totalling £45 18/- were passed for payment. It was decided to remove the toolshed at the back of- the pavilion to a site near the glass-house, the work to be left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Mack. Direction Signs.

Mr Mack brought up the matter of a better direction sign at the corner of Scott and Wordsworth Streets. He mentioned that many people had difficulty in finding the main entrance to the Domain.

Mr Hicks said they should also ask permission of the Borough Council to place a direction sign at the Victoria Street rockery. The whole matter was left in 'thehands of Messrs Hicks and Kelly.
