BOWLING

THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB.

PAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY,

Cambridge bowlers lia.il anotUor dis

appointing afternoon on Saturday last, rain, interrupting play. The morning was fine and the prospects for a good afternoon’s bowling were promising. However, shortly after the luncheon "hour a thunderstorm appeared in the eastern sky. There was a very good muster at the green and hopes were held that the storm would work round Cambridge, but hopes were dashed about 2.30 when rain commenced to fall, to be followed by a thunder shower with a very heavy downpour. The bowlers remained on the green till the last niinute and then, there was a rush for the pavilion. In a short time the greens were absolutely under water and It was rather ludicrous to see bowls dotted about. However, there w r as one compensating feature and that was the bowlers were still able to enjoy their afternoon tea. During its course bowlers viewed the greens with disconsolate eyes. The inevitable .joker of the club—the man with the XXXX bowls—rather aptly suggested that Gordon Sridson, the champion swimmer, who liad already arrived in Cambridge, should have been invited up to the greens to give an exhibition.

Such was the heavy nature of the downpour that soon the fateful notice board—“Xo More-Play To day”—was bung in its usual place, and after chatting a while the members wended their many and devious ways. For the convenience of the players Coo. Lymburn (Hamilton- East) and Hollard (Putaruru) met in the champion singles competition at Cambridge. Starting early their game was completed all but four heads when the rain came on. However, after the greens dried a little permission was given the -players to finish, and in a sensational ■ending Lymburn defeated Hollard by one point. Hollard led all the way and -was five up with three heads to go. Xmyburn got two singles and wanted three to tie and four to win on the final bead. He threw a long head and drew the shot but Hollard beat him for it. Hollard was a bit short with his remaining bowls, and with his third Xymburn took out Hollard’s counter to lie three. Hollard fell short with his last and when the measure was put on "Lymburn. had the necessary four to -win.
