“THE TBESPASSEB.”

Saturday and last night’s attendance at the local theatre speaks for itself of the popularity of the current programme with Gloria Swanson in “The Trespasser.” After seeing this film it is easy to understand the hit it was in London. The chances are that after seeing “The Trespasser,” the English realised, in part at least, what their trouble is as picture producers. Aside from Miss Swanson with her beautiful finished voice and rich trained soprano," this talkie is elegantly made and a thoroughly “finished” production. • y■ ■ '

There is possibly no picture on record with so many, anti-climaxes as “The Trespasser” contains. At least four times the film goes to a finish, as one might think, to take another interesting angle. That is one of the novelties of the story. Three others are Miss Swanson’s wonderful acting, her voice, and her gorgeous, smart _ gowns. Singing two songs, “Love, Your Spell is Everywhere,” and Toselli’s “Serenade,” Miss Swanson surprised and delighted the laTge audiences that have seen the picture. The short features on this programme are extraordinarily good, especially the brilliant musical foaturette “An Irish Fantasy,” and “Mickey the Mouse,” the convulsing comedy' cartoon. ‘ ‘ THE UNHOLY NIGHT. ’ ’ On Thursday what is said to bo one of the most successful mystery thrillers yet attempted by the talking screen, comes to the local theatre in tho form of “The Unholy Night,” with Ernest Torrence, Dorothy Sobastian and Roland Young in the loading roles. The film is directed by the ox-actor of the v silent screen, Lionel 1 Barrymore. In • this picture it is said to be impossible to toll what or how the end is going to . come until the final fade-out.
