THE AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. SPEIGHT’S FINE PERFORMANCE. At the concluding- night of the Auckland provincial swimming championships, held in the Auckland Tepid Bath on Tuesday evening, Selwyn Speight, of Cambridge, enhanced his fine performance of the previous evening by handsomely winning the 440 yards intermediate boys’ championship. He won the event splendidly, beating the Ponsouby swimmer, L. Smythe, by 20 yards, the other competitors withdrawing. Speight’s time for the distance was 6m. 33 2-ss.
A special message to the Independent states that Speight led all the way and spurted in the last lap, the crowd loudly applauding his fine effort. Had he been pressed he could have cut down his time.
Speight, being a meihber of the South Auckland Centre, was allowed to compete by the courtesy of the A.S.C., becoming for the occasion an associate member of the Parnell Club. A Cambridge resident who saw Speight win both the 220 yards and 440 yards intermediate events states that he never performed better.
Mr. M. Champion, well-known Auckland swimming authority, is. of the opinion that Speight would have' an excellent chance of winning the New Zealand intermediate events, and thinks that the Cambridge Swimming Club should apply to the South Auckland Centre to nominate Speight for the events referred to. Wo desire to heartily congratulate the Cambridge lad on his fine performance, and trust that steps will be taken to enter him for the N.Z. championships. MORRINSVILLE GALA. A party of Cambridge swimmers attended the Morrinsville gala on Tuesday evening. The Cambridge relay team was second to Hamilton in the relay race. ( In the 100 yards handicap R. Shaw, of Cambridge, was first, and E. Hall second.
