C.D.H. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ■-/ MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Cam* bridge District High School Committee was held in the schoolroom last even-, ing, when there were present, Messrs A. N. Macky (chairman), H. Ferguson, Geo. Calvert, C. F. Ruge, V. G. Boulton, H. Rowland, Rev. Jas.. Hay, and {he secretary, Mr W. Grumitt. The headmaster (Mr H. Prichard) was also "in attendance. Mr C. W. Clark was grant, ed leave of absence. Tarring and Sanding. ' The matter of tarring and sanding the playing area at the primary department school was discussed, the headmaster pointing but that portions were,in a very bad condition. Hay thought they should provide material that would have some permanency. With the heavy frosts the tarred surface broke up every year. - He suggested a shingle surfacing. " Dr Barnardo's Concerts. The ou option of the schools' attitude towards Dr Barnardo's annual concerts was discussed, and. at the request of the chairman the headmaster expressed the view that the concert interfered too much with the scholars' lessons. He ; preferred that contributions from the scholars be per medium of boxes. It was resolved that a committee be set up to consider the schools' relationship to the Barnardo's concerts and report to a later meeting. It was emphasised that the committee respected the good work being done by the movement, and that the commit-tee-was not opposed to the annual fixture, but that the bulk of the preparation and active participation should not . fall upon the scholars unless at the direct instance of parents. Headmaster's Report. Arising out of the head master's report, the committee extended its congratulations to Mr Prichard and staff at the excellent percentage of proficiency passes gained; also on the splendid inspection report received. Typewriters. A further sheaf of correspondence was received anent the purchase and supply of typewriters for the commercial classes at the secondary department. .. *\ The committee discussed at length the offers received from the agents of two makes of. machines, and finally it ; was resolved that six Remington No. 12 machines at £l3 each and one brief machine at £l4 5s be purchased, subject to the terms as previously offered being confirmed; alsd maintenance service offered . , , It was also agreed that before the above resolution is put into effect the Education Department be written to, asking that in view of all the circumstances, if they are prepared to give a subsidy on the Remington machines. 1 General. The'Education Department advised. that a subsidy would be granted on the purchase of school gramophones. ./, . Monthly Report. The headmaster submitted a review" of the past month 's_ operations. The % attendance in the primary department last week gave an average of 474 but of a total roll of 517, while in the secondary department, the average attendance was 81 out of a roll of 86. The schools would break-up on De--cember 18 and resume on February 4.
