AFTER LEAGUE TEST

MILD SENSATION AT DINNER.

BEFEIUEE'S SPIRITED REPLY.

(By Telegran*" —Ptw* Association") AUCKLAND, Yesterday.

There was a mild sensation at the complimentary dinner tendered to the touring 'English League team on Saturday evening.

In proposing the toast of the referee, the English captain, Mr J. J. Sullivan, said the rulings were difficult to follow , and he was disappointed with the decisions. When he questioned the referee about the matter he did not receive a satisfactory reply. He congratulated the New Zealand team on the splendid spirit in which the game was fought. Mr Bull, replying to his toast, said: "I will talk straight to Mr Sullivan and tell him the Englishmen did not play the game. They were trying to point throughout, the match. I am willing to thrash my decisions out before a meeting of the Referees' Association at which the English managers and team are present. In my opinion the team were a lot of 'squealers' throughout, which I consider unpatriotic. I could have penalised the English fullback much more frequently for not retiring behind the scrum, but for playing the advantage rule. There were two other captains on the fidd to-day as regards q-testioning my- decisions —one forward and one back. The forward threatened to take the team off the field, he said, it was not given a fair chance. I consider this attitude was quite unfair to me."
