SWIMMING

SCHOLARS QUALIFY FOR CERTIFICATES. 84 FROM CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL. During the past ill rye years the Cambridge Amateur Swimming and Lifesaving Club has earned commendation from all sides for the part it has played in encouraging swimming among the younger members of the district community. It will be appreciated that such praise is merited when it is mentioned that during the aforementioned period over 500 district school children have been taught to swim. Instituted over three years ago the provision of a aw aiming instructor for one year solely by the club and for the remaining, two years jointly by the Borough Council and the Swimming Club has proved fully justified by the excellent results

obtained. Despite the fact that swimming instruction classes have been excellently supported by. tlu District High School pupils and at 1/0 per pupil per season, the club have received consid-

erable revenue, it has not been sufficient to meet the expenses of the instructor. The balance'of expense from 11:o club’s ordinary revenue'has been met cheerfully by the executive, who realise that one of the principal objects of the club is to teach swimming. Tiie value to a child of possessing the knowledge and ability to swim heeds no omphftsis here, nevertheless it

must be particularly gratifying to, the club’s executive to know that, they

have been instrumental iu providingover 000 children with the knowledge and ability. that may at any time bo the means of protecting and saving life. Again this season the value of swimming instruction is observed in the number of scholars qualifying for the X.Z. Amateur Swimming Association’s certificates. The record of the local District High School is very pleasing, S 4 pupils qualifying for distances from 00yds to 880yds. ' Owing to distance from the public bath country scholars are at a disadvantage. However, increased interest was displayed in swimming by the out-district scholars towards the close of the present season, and it is to be hoped that next season transport difficulties will be overcome and pupils will enjoy the advantages of regular swimming instruction. While the number of pupils- qualifying this year is not a record, a. gratifying feature is the number who have qualified in distances over 50yds. Of the 84- pupils from the local school, M 3 qualified for 50yds, 34 for 220yds and 17 for' 880yds. Several of the latter 'have received only two years’ tuition. All the scholars qualified under the personal and careful supervision of the instructor, Mr Frank Green, who is to be congratulated on the results of the present, season.

Apart from the aforementioned pupils a largo number of infants commenced tuition this season, and have made excellent progress, many of whom can swim 25yds without any difficulty. Scholars who have qualified for, certificates are as follows: —
