COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING LEGALISING A ROAD. The April meeting of the Matamata County Council was held at Thau yesterday, when there were present: Crs J. W. Anderson (chairman), 8. H. Judd, Iv. S. Cox, J. Pohlen and C. A. Rollott; also in attendance, Mr H. Lewis (advisory clerk), Mr C. F. E. Barton (clerk), and Mr M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer). Legalising a Ilorahora Road. The Department of-Land and Survey wrote stating they regretted the council refused to, endorse its consent to the taking of a road through Horahora, more especially in view of the direct statement made by the council that they were prepared to accept dedication. “No expenditure,” stated the department, “of Government money could be incurred towards formation until the road had been legalised.” The department further advised that Mr R. R. On* has already advised .this office that the ratepayers, of the district affected hajvc undertaken to form and grade the road through Lots 1 and 2 of Section 95, your council agreeing to attend to the matter of sanding it. However, as matters appear to have reached a deadlock and as the matter is one of some urgency I have to request you to kindly return the tracing at your earliest convenience, when action to legalise the road will be taken under tlio provision of the Public. Works Act, 1908.” The council decided to draw the department’s attention to previous correspondence on the subject and to point out that the council had no undertaking from the Lands Department or the settlers that either of them were prepared to do the formation work.
