NEW BUILDINGS

CAMBRIDGE POWER BOARD. SPLENDID UP-TO-DATE PREMISES The new. premises erected for the Cambridge Power Board have just been handed over to the Board by the contractors, Messrs. Speight, Pearce, Nicoll and Davys, Ltd., and will be occupied immediately. These new buildings erected at the corner of Empire and Alpha streets, comprise one of the finest blocks in Cambridge, and are a distinct asset to the town, and a credit to the Power Board, the architects, contractors and the district.

The buildings, of two storeys, are attached to thl> Power Board’s sub- station and are constructed of concrete. While the outstanding feature of the general appearance is one of substance and utility, the style of architecture is distinctly pleasing to the eye. The finish is of plain concrete, whitened, the . windows all being of steel frames so much in vogue just now. The whole structure has been, built of the best materials, and finished in first-class style, with the result that the premises are undoubtedly among the finest of their class anywhere in the Waikato. The finish of the interior throughout is of white plaster, with' appropriate mouldings of neat design. The doors and all joinery are of firstclass rimu. All windows have steel frames, with white-tiled sills, while alt corners in the building are rounded. Every room in the building is provided, with electric heating and lightingpoints. The finish throughout is firstclass. Careful attention has been paid to ventilation, while all rooms are lofty and well lighted. The arrangement of the premises is also well thought-out, and convenient. The main tiled-floor entrance is from Empire street, the front doors being of very neat diamond-shaped bevelled glass. From the vestibule entrance is given to two large offices on either side, these being for letting purposes. These arc very fine apartments, each being provided with a strongroom.

The public office has space for a small show-rooqi for. electrical goods, while the clerical staff have ample room and every facility for their work, —spacious counter, stropg-room, and. built-in supboard. Adjoining are comfortable private offices for the sccre r tary and engineer respectively, while there is another office for letting purr poses. Access to the upper storey is gained by a wide well-graded stair- / way, opening on to a spacious landing, f The board-room on this storey is a very commodious, handsomely appointed room, 21ft x 16ft, provided with a most convenient and useful table of a **> semi-circular shape, around which the Board members assemble for their meetings. The chairs, tables, etc., are all of fine rimu timber, of excellent and appropriate design, though by no means elaborate. A cloak-room is attached to the board-room, while the lighting is by means of beautiful diffused light, with Brascolite fittings. Similar lights are provided in the lie office on the ground floor. ‘ "*) There arc three offices on the upper storey to let. Two of these are especially fine apartments, fronting Empire street and Alpha street. Conveniences, was K-basins, etc., are also provided on both floors. -

The contractors fpr the building, Messrs. Speight, Pearce, Nicoll and Davy s, Ltd., are to be commended for having turned out a highly creditable job. The architects were Messrs. Edgeeumbe and White. The contract price .for the building was a trifle under £3OOO. Mr Savory, our local cabinetmaker, provided the furnishings. „ The sub-station buildings, which adjoin the new offices, have been roughcasted outside. Portion of this part of the building will now be utilised for testing and store-rooms. , \ The Power Board is to be congratula-.. . ted on having erected such handsome, and serviceable buildings at such, a . most reasonable price. The Board hopes that this new enterprise will be practically self-supporting in the near future.
