A NARROW ESCAPE. MAX AND CHILD INJURED. BY A LIONESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association 1 ) GISBORNE, this day. At the showgrounds yesterday while a threfttyear-old boy was standing at the barrier watching the lions' cage, a lioness shot out a paw and caught the child round the neck. The boy's father threw his hands Tound the child's neck, when the lioness shot out her otheT paw., inflicting wounds on the man's two hands. The child sustained, a deep cut in the neck. The father and son were sent to the hospital. FIRE AT WELUNOTON. POUR STOREY BUILDING GUTTED. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, this day. A four-storey brick building on Eambton Quay, belonging to Harold Brown and Co., wine and spirit merchants, was destroyed by fire early this morning. A strong breeze was blowing and the brigade had some difficulty in preventing the spread of the flames. Brown's estimate they had about £.10,000 worth of stock, and hold insurances of between £6OOO and £7OOO. The ground floor and front of the building was a bootshop, into which Geo. Ardrcy only' moved yesterday. A considerable amount of stock had been placed in the shop, but it was not insured. At the back the Were tea-rooms were also gutted. The adjoining shops suffered from water.

MOTORING ACCIDENTS. COLLISION AT HAMILTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association) HAMILTON, Oct. 29. A collision occurred between motorcars driven by Mr F. Lind and Mr J. B. B. Byrch, both of Hamilton, at tho corner .of Bridge and Grey Streets. Mr Lind's car was proceeding up Bridge Street and turned toward Claudelands, while the other was travelling in the opposite direction. Mr Byrch's car was extensively damaged, and Mr Byrch was himself thrown out, receiving a severe shaking. LADY KNOCKED FROM CYCLE. ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association) HAMILTON, Oct. 28. A married woman named Mrs Kate Elizabeth Cooke, aged 50, the wife of Mr Thomas Cooke, painter, of Milton Street, Hamilton, was knocked from her bicycle by a. motor-car driven by Mr John Began, of Hamilton, at the corner of Ohaupo Road and Clarence Street, last Monday evening. She was admitted to the Waikato Hospital. The extent of her injuries cannot be ascertained until an X-ray examination has been made. The bicycle was wrecked. Mr Bogan said he dimmed his lights immediatelly prior to the accident when passing a motor-car, and that when ho switched the lights on again the cyclist was in front of him and he could not avoid tho collision. MANGAHAO EI^ECTRICITY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. The ceremony of officially opening the Mangahao hydro-eleetrie works will be performed on Monday by tho Prime Minister, in the presence of a number of Ministers of the Crown, members of Parliament, and visitors. After the opening ceremony, which will take place at the power-house, there will be an official, banquet, the Parliamentary party returning to the city in time for the evening sitting.
