BOWLING, CROQUF.T AND TENNIS

OFFICIAL OPENINGS

On Saturday afternoon last the sea-

son for summer pastimes was ushered jn.the Borough with the official openings of the Bowling and Domain Crocpietygreens 'and tennis courts, and alfii'ough the clerk of the weather was not in too kindly humour, lain squalls occurring just at the time s«-t down for the openings, nevertheless there was a very good attendance of both local enthusiasts and visitors, the various greens presenting the activity of the

summer season. The bowling greens are presenting a ranch improved appearance on their condition of a few weeks back, while the environs are also taking on a most attractive appearance, the various trees •with their restful colour and the laTge pergola is a mass of greenery, intermingled with clusters of blue and white wistaria. With tho rose and othcKkplots coining into bloom, the whcnAmakes up a scene of beauty that •would bd very difficult to surpass in the Island.

The Croquet lawns which are entering their second year of service are looking particularly well and with their delightful surroundings have created a •valuable addition to tk'v end of the. Domain Cardens. The Domain Croquet, dub is deserving of much credit for tho great headway i? has made since •j|he-inception of th? Club and still more wo when, as we published a short, time ■ f ago, the number of improvements created on the Croquet lawns are now assets to the Club without my liabilities attached.

Quite a number of peofde witnessed the games on ibo various greens, but the attendance in tl s respect was marred by the weather. The Cambridge Municipal Band dispersed a pleasing programme from the Band rotunda and also in the vicinity

<of the croquet greens and tennis courts, and a nice selection of tunes added considerably to the enjoyment of all present.

BOWLING. ' Cambridge bowling enthusiasts, and the local club possesses many very keen members, are fortunate in that they have the privilege of taking part in their fascinating pastime practically throughout, the year and during the last few months the winter green, which, has held particularly well in condition, has been made much use of However, with the official opening of the greens for the summer season on Saturday a greatly increased number of nxembers were on the greens, while the club was also favoured with visiting from the Hamilton, Wliitiora and Frftnkton clubs. Fortunately shortly after the opening the weather cleared and a most, pleasant afternoon was -spent in enjoyable games. Mr T. F. Richards (President) expressed his pleasure at seeing so many of the members present despite the fact that the Club’s Committee had been unable to make satisfactory arrangements •with the clerk of the weather, and extended a hearty welcome to all’present, especially tho visiting bowlers. ’The President expressed his wishes that those present that after toon would have anjjjljoynble time and that the 11)24-25 summer season would be a successful one. Although the Club wen*, by necessity, handicapped at the commencement of the season, with having only two greens for play, there was now evidence that, the new green would be shortly ready for play and he hoped tho Club would he favoured with the presence, of many visiting clubs during the season, assuring them of a. hearty welcome at the hands of the local club. After Mrs Richards h id rolled up the *‘ jack ’ ’ in approved style, the President declared the greens open, for the

summer season, amid the applause of the assemblage. At the conclusion of "he afternoon’s play, Mr J. R. Fow (Mayor of Hamilton) and President of the Whitiora Club returned hearty thanks to the club for an enjoyable afternoon. It was always a. pleasure for Hamilton boilers to visit the Cambridge Club, for whatever the fortunes of the games

were, visitors were always assured of an enjoyable time on the Cambridge greens. In concluding Mr Fow extended a very’ hearty welcome to members of trie local club to visit the Hamilton Clubs during the present, season. The visitors then gave three hearty eheers for the local members which was no less h eartily reei proe ated. During the afternoon a delightful repast was handed round by the ladies which was greatly appi eiated. The Play.

As usual on such occasions a match •was played between teams representing New Zealand versus The World and proved a very close contest, the “All Blacks” winning by 139 points to 135.

There were about fifty members and friends present at the official opening of the Domain Croquet lawns, visitors being present from the To Kuiti, Whitiora and Cambridge Clubs. The president of the club (Mrs W. .T. White) welcomed members to the lawns for the summer season, and expressed pleasure at the presence of the visiting members. The president then declared the lawns open, and the afternoon was enjoyablv spent in play. Progressive croquet was played, the winners being Mrs Evans, of: Te Kuiti, A prize, and Mrs F. Hardy, B prize. Golf croquet was also played, Mrs Hodgkinson, of Whitiora Club, proving the winner. ' During the course of the play an interval was made for afternoon tea. Altogether the club’s opening was very successful. LAWN TENNIS. THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB. There was :i splendid attendance at the Cambridge Club’s tennis courts on Saturday, for the official opening. The courts have been put in excellent order this year—better than for a long time past —and many players have been practising for some weeks past, and are already in fair form.

In the unavoidable absence of the president. (Mr Frank Penn), who wired his good wishes, Mr E. B. Cox (ex president.) briefly introduced the Mayor, and asked Mr Priestley to formally open the season. The Mayor, after making a few appropriate remarks, “served” the first ball over the net, and declared the season duly open, and wished the Club all success. The courts were fully occupied till a late hour, those participating spending an enjoyable time. The ladies provided a most delectable afternoon tea, which was much enjoyed. It is pleasing to know that the Club’s prospects arc most cheering, many new members having joined up, while considerable enthusiasm is being shown. ST. PAUL’S TENNIS CLUB. Improvements to the St. Paul’s tennis courts are now nearly completed, and the courts were occupied for the first time this season by a number of enthusinsls yesterday. FEXCOUKT TENNIS CLUB. Thu Fom-ourr Tennis Club officially opened tiie courts for play on Saturday last. The ceremony was performed by the president (Mr A. C. Beer), who in ,a short but effective speech referred to the pleasant times the members enjoyed lasi season and hoped that all would endeavour to make the present season a success. The attendance was very satisfactory considering the unsettled nature of the weather. Teams were, chosen by the president and .secretary, play resulting in a win for the former by five sets (45 games) to four (43 games). During the progress of the matches the ladies of the club provided afternoon tea. Play on the Courts was continued to a late hour. GOLF. MIXED FO UIISOMES.
