RIFLE CLUB

ANNUA! GENERA! MEETING. SECRETARY \8 REPORT. At the annual meeting of the Cambridge Defence Eiflc Club on Saturday evening the secretary reported:— I have plea-sure in presenting a report of the. working of the Club for the season just concluded. The Club has been confronted with a number of difficulties during the year, but under the circumstances I can say that the season has been a successful one. . The membership roll stands at about the same number as last year, namely about 30, but members have been somewhat slow in paying their subscriptions and I expect to receive about .10 more shortly.. The Club has been extremely unlucky with the weather this year. Quite a number of shoots have had to lie. postponed or cancelled on account of rain, and the programme has been considerably interrupted. Only 12 Club shoots have been held during the season; the attendance of members ;;i the competitions also has been somewhat lower than usual. In consequence of these conditions the sales of ammunition and the entrance; fees have been lower, and this has considerably reduced the revenue of the Club.

Members of the Club have been highly successful, in outside matches this season, and I judge that this has done a great deal to enhance the reputation of the Club in shooting circles.

On U)th January a tea.m of seven members journeyed to Tauranga. and fired a "match against the Tauranga Club. The Cambridge team won by the narrow margin of 4 points.. On 12th April a. team of 12 journeyed to Frankton. Tho match resulted in a' win for Cambridge, by the good margin of 45 points. The Frankton team also made a trip here on another occasion. The match was started, but hat! to be abondoned on account of rain. The Club had only one representative at the National Rifle' Association 's big meeting at Trentham this year, but President Feisst distinguished himself by getting into the "King's Fifty." out of 250 of the Dominion's best shots. Eight members attended the South Auckland'Rifle Association's meeting at Waihi at Easter, which was a. most enjoyable and well-conducted event. The Cambridge riflemen figured prominently in the prize lists, all being successful in winning prize money. Ten members took part in the FraserSmith Challenge Belt Contest at Frankton. Cambridge did not manage to bring back the belt this year, but gave a good account of themselves. The teams' match on this occasion resulted in a tic between Cambridge and Frankton C team. Since the last, annua] meeting the Defence Department has granted a lea.se of the rifle range to the Cambridge Golf Club. The Department, however, has reserved the right for units of the

defence forces to use the range at any time. We simply have to advise the Hamilton Defence Office upon what days we desire the use of the range, and the Defence Office gives due notice to the lessees.

In accordance with a motion passed at the last annual meeting, the firing mounds have been improved, and sundry repairs effected to the shed. The sand on. the mounds is still rather loose but should settle and bind in the course

of time. The butts could do with an overhaul, and a working-bee could carry out the necessary work.

I would ask every member to endeavour to bring a new recruit info the Club during the following season. I think it is important that the membership of the Club should be increased. Larger membership will make the Club stronger financially, and also stronger as a shooting body.
