STOCK INSPECTOR
OVERWORKED OFTICERS,
During the visit of the Hon. J. G. Coates to Te Awamutu, on Wednesday last, on behalf of the Dairy Farmers' Union Air F. Quin urged assistance for the local stock inspector. Mr Melrose is an efficient officor but it is totally impossible for him to discharge his manifold duties under present conditions. He is supposed to conduct his office, issue permits, and be available when needed, yet at the same time he has his duties in the field. There had been a mild outbreak of blackleg in the district and cattle tick had made its appearanco in the near vicinity. They urged that an assistant inspector be appointed; that a car be provided for quick transport, and that the telephone be installed at the inspector's residence so that communication could be assured in cases of emergency. Mr Lye endorsed these representations, explaining that fliere had been a similar difficulty at Cambridge. It was impossible under present conditions for farmers to get into touch with the inspectors. The conditions were, unsatisfactory and should be remedied on the lines suggested. Mr Coates said he would certainly bring the matter to the notice of the Minister of Agriculture immediately.
