OPERATION AT SEA.

A successful operation was carried out at sea last week on the steamer Port Victoria, which arrived from Liverpool yesterday. . Seaman Willis developed an abscess his ear which was removed by Dr Bransgrove, the anaesthetic being administered by a lady doctor, Miss E. M. Nubble, of Adelaide. As the doetor’s instruments were on another ship it was necessary to improvise some from chsels with the aid of the ship’s carpenter and chief steward. The latter and a passenger assisted at the operation, which was performed in the saloon, the steamer’s speed being reduced for two hours. KAIWAKA TUNNEL TRAGEDY. ONE BODY FOUND. The body of John Robert Hohensoe, who was buried when part of the Kaiwaka tunnel collapsed on Thursday, was extricated early yesterday morning, and brought to Napier. The inquest was formally opened and adjourned. Deceased was aged about 37, not 50 as reported previously. The workers have not yet found the body of T. O’Mahoney. MOTOR CAR CAPSIZES. GISBORNE, Monday. A motor lorry conveying a part of natives from an entertainment at Wlia-. tatutii early on Sunday morning overturned on a steep road through the .brakes failing to act. Five persons were injured, two having fractured collarbones, while the others had severe abrasions and injuries to their eyes. COMET DISCOVERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. A cornet, invisible to the unaided eve, lias been discovered by a "Wanganui observer, Mr Moovshead, by whom it has been reported to Dr C. ,E. Adams, the Government Astronomer. The region in which the comet was seen is about luilf-way between Beta Triangulao Australis and Theta Sborpii, which are known to most people who study the heavens. The position is unfortunately poor for observation, as it is low down on the southern half of the sky. FATALITY AT OHUTU. THE INJURED MAN. (By Telegraph —Press Association) TAIHAPE, Dec. 2. Samuel Miller, who was injured in the collapse of a bridge at Olmtu, is still in a critical condition. He received a nasty blow on the head, and is bruised from head to foot. He is suffering very severely from shock and the lengthy immersion in the river, but no bones are broken. PAPER MILLS PLANT, , •; GORE, Dec. 2. The water was turned on the new power plant at the Mataura paper mills on Saturday. The plant is the largest in Now Zealand, and the machinery is being transferred from the Riverhead mills. The company is making Mataura the headquarters of the industry.
