FOOTBALL

LEAGUE MATCH

LOWER WAIKATO V. HAMILTONCAMBRIDGE

On Saturday afternoon last a League match was played at Victoria Squaro, Cambridge, between the above teams, before a fair attendance of spectators. Waikato sent a strong team, though it included several emergencies. The combined Hamilton-Cambridge team was not as strong as expected, the popular Dufty being among the absentees. The teams were:—

Lower Waikato. —Da vies, G. Paynor, D. Johnson, P. Miki, Jackson, Holley, A. Paynor, Trevctter, Stevenson, Paid, Warring, S. Paynor, and Sherran. Combined Team. —Cooper, Appleby, Huline, Cawlinson, Pau, Stewart, McIvor, Dent, Campbell, Kelly, Payne, West, Allen.

The game was not. a brilliant exhibition of League ,though there were patches of fine play that caused much excitement among the spectators. What was lacking in science, however, was made up by the variety in the game. In the first half Lower Waikato had all the best of the game, and appeared to score almost when they liked, but in the second spell the combined team retrieved their lost laurels, and the game eventually ended in their favour by 31 to 25, after a somewhat extraordinary game, with heavy scoring on both sides. Soon after the game had commenced, after a passing rush, Allen scored first blood for the Hamilton-Cambridge combination, Dent, converting. This was the only score of the spell by the combined team. Lower Waikato soon got into their stride, and scores came quickly. Johnson, who was playing a pretty game, raced over the line on three occasions, while Paki, and Holly (2) also secured tries. Only one of these was converted, by Johnson. The spell ended in favour of Lower Waikato by 20 to 5.

On resuming after the spell, the Cam-bridge-Hamilton boys put. more life into their play. The opening score was made by Pau, after a fine dodgy run fully half tho length of the field. Then Cawlinson scored twice in succession, and Stewart, who had not been conspicuous in the first half, made a fine opening, and, assisted by Cooper, added another try. One of these was converted by Dent, making the score 16 — 20, in favour of Waikato. The latter team pulled themselves together once more, and Holley added a try, after a long straight run down the side line. This was converted by the scorer, bringing score to 25, against 16. The combined team now played with more combination, some very pretty flashes of play being witnessed, though. (he backs did not work together as they might. Stewart, West and Appleby each scored in quick succession, and the kicks all being failures, the score was 25 all. There were only a few minutes to go, and it looked as though it might be a drawn game, but the combined team had a little left up their sleeves, and West and Pau each scored tries before the whistle sounded. Thus a heavy scoring match ended in a, well-earned win for Hamilton-Cambridge, by 3.1 to

Mr Hill, of Taupiri, acted as referee. For the winners, Pau Avas a hard grafter, and made many fine openings. Stewart was not prominent in the first spoil, but in the latter half showed some of his old good form. Cawlinson, Cooper and Mclvor all did well. Campbell was a. particularly hard worker among the forwards. For the losers, Johnson proved a dangerous scorer, while A. Raynor frequently made fine openings. There was a lack of general combination among the players, however, on the whole.

BINNIE CUP MATCH Hautapu (winners of the Cambridge senior championship) challenged ' City (Hamilton champion team) for the Binnio Cup, and the match was played on Saturday last. Hautapu sorely missed their captain (A. Thompson), who was seriously injured in the last match for the Peace Cup. The game was mostly confined to forwards, and though hard-fought, was not a first-class exhibition. City won by the narrow margin of one point —six points (por.a!t,y, goal and unconverted try) to a eonverted goal.
