CAMBRIDGE TOURNAMENT SECOND DAY’S PLAY The weather was again most favourable on Thursday for the second day’s play of the annual Cambridge tournament, which commenced on Wednesday. Rain set in rather suddenly late in the afternoon, but by that time the principal events were completed. All who participated spent an enjoyable time. Following are results of Thursday’s play:— CHAMPIONSHIP. Third Round

N. Banks beat W. Vickers, 3 and 2; Barker beat A. H. Nieoll, 5 and 4; D.. Banks beat J. Banks, 4 and 2; H. Gillies beat Nelson, 4 and 3. Semi-Finals In the semi-linals Barker beat N. Banks, 1 up; 11. Gillies bear, B. Banks, 5 and 4. MEDAL COMPETITION The second medal competition, played in the morning, was won by Entwisle (Cambridge), whose score was 97, less 20, nett 77. The next best cards were: F. Band, 85—8—77; Lawer, 91—14 87; D. Banks, BS—lO—7S; 11. Nelson, 59—10—79; N. Banks, 59—10—79; W. Vickers, 91 —12—79; Rhind, 90 —10— 80; H. T. Gillies, 85—5—80; J. Banks, S7 —0—81; Barker, S9—B—Bl; A. Gillies, 91—10— SI; A. H. Nieoll', 93—10 83; Wilkie, 95—12—83. BOGEY COMPETITION The second bogey competition was won by F. Entwisle (Cambridge), 1 up. A POPULAR WIN CONCLUSION OF TOURNAMENT The annual golf tournament at Cambridge was' brought to a conclusion yesterday, when the devotees of this popular game were again fortunate in having fine weather. Yesterday morning the final for the championship was decided between H. D. Gillies (Hamilton) and F. Barker (Timaru). The contest was an exceedingly keen and interesting one. The players kept very close together throughout the entire match, there never being more than two points between them. Eventually Gillies won by the narrow margin of one up, amidst great excitement. The match was watched by a considerable number of enthusiasts, who loudly cheered the winner. Mr Gillies’ win was an exceedingly popular one. He is one of the oldest golfers in the Waikato, and a first-class sport. Last year championship honours were Avon by Jos. Banks.

MEDAL HANDICAP

A medal handicap match was played yesterday morning, being won by D. Banks with the good score of 84, less B—7fi nett. D. Banks did the second round in 39, the bogey for this being 41. The winner is son of Mr N. Banks, and is as yet only a lad in his teens. He shows great promise as a golfer. The best cards returned by other competitors were: H. Hartv, 97 —20 — 77; W. Vickers, 89—10—79; A. W. Gillies 89—10—79; F. Entwislc, 94—14 80; F. Bond, 89 —8—81; F. Wilkie, 91 10—81; A. H. Nicoll, 91—10—81; S. Tate, S9 —7 —82; R. Itenshaw, 93 —10— 83. FOUR-BALL BOGEY In the afternoon a four-ball best ball bogey handicap was played, being won by A. W. Gillies (Auckland) and A. H. Nicoll (Cambridge), 4 up. These players won the same competition last year. The runners-up were R. R-enshaw and J. Banks, 3 up. Next best cards: —Wilkie and Harty, 2 up; H. D. Gillies and Ellis, all square; N. and D. Banks, all square; F. Bond and Morpeth, 1 down; Vickers and Barker, 1 down; McKenzie and Moorhousc, .1 down; Nelson and Entwislc, 2 down. Conclusion. At the conclusion of the tournament the prizes were presented by the president (Dr Stapley), who congratulated the winners and said he trusted the visitors had spent a pleasant time. Mr A. Gillies, on behalf of the visitors, returned thanks for the hospitality shown them by the Cambridge people, and said they had spent a delightful time. Mr Gillies stated that he came to the Cambridge tournament every year, and had nover seen the course in such good order as it was this year.

Thus ended a most successful tournament. A special word of thanks is due to Mr A. H. Nicoll (tournament secretary), who worked indefatigably throughout. It was very largely owing to his efforts that eyervthing passed off so smoothly and successfully.
