LEAGUE NOTES (By Looker-on.)

The Cambridge Reps, journeyed to Hamilton on Saturday, and played a return match with Hamilton on Hinemoa Park, the League’s new ground. The ground was very heavy, and partially under water, which made a good display of back play almost impossible. For Cambridge all. the backs played a good solid game, but the state of the ball made it impossible to handle it. J. Wilkinson, at full, played a great game, his defensive play being very good. Pau. Appleby, Cooper and McDonald also played fine games, the former, being very conspicuous. Among the forwards Campbell, Robinson, West and Kelly were very noticeable, and all played fine games. C. Monro and J. .Dawson, two of the N.S.W. Rugby Union reps., who played against the N.Z. Rugby reps, last, year, have 'turned over to League, ami are now playing in Sydney dubs. Moure, who is only 19 years of age, is close on 6ft. in height, and weighs over Hist, is slaying with conspicuous ,success for University. Dawson is also a young player, and is considered a coming star. He has thrown in his lot with Eastern Suburbs.

gthened. The reps, will also be strengthened in the back division, which is

their only weak spot. The League game is booming iu Canterbury. six senior teams being in the competitions. The Addington team is loading, having an unbeaten record so far. The class of play is of a high standard, and Canterbury is in hopes of bringing back the Northern Union Cup when returning from its Northern tour. The games for the Northern Union Cup, which was won last season by South Auckland, promises a period of leading play in Hamilton this year. All the League provinces have issued challenges for it, and they will find the defending team well arranged for the invasion. Canterbury is the first province in with a challenge, but it is as yet too early in the season to fix a date for inter-provincial play. The Canterbury touring team will be found to be a powerful one this year.

On Monday last four Christchurch teams visited Ashburton and played exhibition matches there, and there is a big prospect of the game being started there this season. The Sydney Referee scribe in referring to the match, South Sydney versus Newtown, says: —“I take off my hat to South Sydney as exemplars in the art of Rugby League. Their football brought vividly to mind the exploits of the 190,1 N.Z. Rugby team. Each man seems to have cultivated a side step, a trickiness of foot that beats the tackier at close quarters. Thus we saw the wing three-quarters, when seemingly smothered on the touch line, get the ball out to a mate and send the attack at top speed for the goal line. There was no fluke about South Sydney’s score. So wonderful was their football that they won by 33 to 10. B. Wearing, South Sydney’s wing three-quarter is a slippery youth and a most delightful player to watch. But an even more glittering man on the day was the

young half-back, A. Johnson, who gave us a brilliant, as varied and as wonderful football as Duncan Thompson has ever shown at his top. I have never seen any scrum half in either Rugby or League code play a finer game than Johnson did in Saturday’s match. We have soon Fred Roberts, of New Zealand, McKnight and Duncan Thompson, the great League half-back, three of the star half-backs of all time, but I have never seen one of these artists surpass the superb football, the brilliancy and trickiness of the South Sydney youth on this occasion. Those youths will rise to their heights if they can reproduce that form which they revealed last week.”
