MATAMATA FIRE
riVE SHOES DESTROYED (By Telegraph—Press Association) MATAMATA, March 16. There was a serious fire last night in the centre of the town. Five shops were x entirely destroyed. It commenced at nine o 'clock, and the buildings were completely razed' at ten. The conflagration started in shops owned by Mr J. Corbott, and occupied by Mr Eoigard (tea rooms), and M/ Arnold (fruiterer). It quickly spread to tho block of buildings adjoining, owned by Mr W. Darby, and occupied by Mr W. Gale (ironmonger), Misses Montague (drapers), and Mr E. -Rowe (hairdresser and billiard saloon). 9>The efforts of tho bucket brigade saved Mr Folloett's bakery.and the adjoining buildings. Messrs Roigard and. Arnold and the Misses Montague lost all their stock and effects; but Messrs Gale and Rowe saved a part of their stock.
The loss on the buildings is over £ISOO.
