BUILDINGS IN HAMILTON

A HOUSE A DAY During the past two years no less than 387 houses have been erected in Hamilton, according to Mr J. E. Tidd, president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. These figures, he told the Chamber at a meeting on Monday night, represented the erection of almost one house for every working day in the two years. He bad recently made a tour of the North Island, and nowhere were the same signs of prosperity evident as in Hamilton. ' The class of house in Hamilton also compared more than favourably with thoso of other places, and personally, despite all the talk of high rents, he did not think they were too high in Hamilton. There wen; really very few houses in Hamilton to rent, and he knew of no place where so many residents were their own landlords. Daring the past three years buildings had been put up in the town to the value of £735,780, or nearly three-quarters of a million.

Mr Lambert said the cost of building in Hamilton' was not much greater than in" other, places. • What kept the rents; high was the great cost, of land. The speaker thought it a mistake :,to demand a 50 f eot f rohtage.'' arid •said slums'could be avoided, by compelling all buildings to have .street frontages. —Waikato Times.
