ON THE LAND

ABOUND THE MANAWATU STOCK IN GREAT SHAPE Farming conditions generally throughout the Manawatu are just now excellent for the time of the year, and according to the opinions advanced to the writer, by several farmers of long standing, the present is one of the best winters experienced in the district for many years (says the Manawatu Daily Times). From all quarters come reports of stock being in splendid condition, and everywhere there is an abundance of feed. The cows are already starting to come in, there being now a few young calves around most farms, with the quota being daily added to. Indications are that the cows will come into profit in good heart —and early at that. This is bound to have an appreciable effect on the flow of milk, for the earlier a cow conies into profit the better, provided there is a plcntitudc of good food. Favourable Outlook All things considered, the dairying season in the Manawatu will start out under the best jiossible auspices, and the chances are that once the winter’s financial “washing-up” is over, financial conditions will tend to stabilise more; for there is no gainsaying the fact that if the farmers, who have been hard-pressed during the last twelve months or so, survive the present winter, their prospects of ultimate survival will have been materially improved. Bearing this in mind, many would-be investors and mercantile houses are at present largely marking time; but once the now season is in full swing the situation should ease up considerably, and money, it is anticipated, will be in greater supply.
