Mr Hollings, S.M., has now definitely decided not to contest the Masterton seat. Mr S. Callaway, for several years a New Zealand and Canterbury representative cricketer, is dangerously ill in the Christchurch Hospital.

Mr C. H. Hargreaves, who has been on a visit to Australia, extending over some six weeks, has returned to Hautapu, after spending a very pleasant holiday.

The Eev. Jasper Calder, of Auckland, has definitely agreed to come to Cambridge and conduct the next community “sing” at the Town Hall on Thursday of next week, August 3rd.

Owing to the increased attendance, the Cambridge District High School is entitled to an extra teacher. Miss Lr. Mason, from Newmarket, has arrived to fill this position, and commenced her duties yesterday.

A press wire from Hawera states that a requisition reported to contain over 1000 signatures of electors lias been presented to Mr G. W. Pearce at Patea, asking him to stand as a candidate at the general election. Mr Pearce gave a pledge that he would contest the seat. >

Mr Edward Newman, Eeform member for Manawatu, intimates that he will not contest the seat at next election. Mr Whibley, of Foxton (Labour) and Mr W. Murdoch, of Shannon (Independent), are said to be certain nominees for the seat.

Mr T. Glover, cartoonist of New Zealand Truth and Free- Lance, has been ' appointed Melbourne cartoonist and writer for the Sydney Bulletin, a position formerly held by such distinguished artists and penmen ns the late, Mr Alfred Vincent and Mr David Low.

Miss F. Hobbs, F.S.M., of Danncvirke, who is leaving for England early in August to pursue her musical studies, is* at present spending the few weeks remaining before she leaves with her father, the Eev. J. Hobbs, of Palmerston North.

Mr J. F. McDermott, who for nearly five years has held the position of linotype mechanic and news room foreman on the staff of the Waipa Post, left Te Awamutu last Friday, to take up a similar position on the Franklin Times, Pukckohe. Mr W. H. Davis, of the Rangitikei Advocate, Marton, and. formerly of the Colonist, Nelson, succeeds Mr McDermott at the Waipa Post, and is to take- up his duties within the next few weeks.
