UNDER LEAGUE RULES. MATANGI 36 V. CITY EOVEES 11. This match, played at Matangi, attracted a large number 6f spectators. The game was very fast and open, and some splendid play was witnessed. The maroons’ (Matangi) combination was responsible for their fine score. Rovers (black and white) were somewhat disorganised but several of the team were conspicuous for good play, notably McKearney, Matakoe, Campbell, Robertson and McMillan, the latter’s goalkicking being of a very high order. From the kick-off Rovers full-back returned to Shaw, who knocked on. Matangi got the ball from the scrum, and a passing rush carried play to Rovers’ line, Avhere McMillan was prominent in a dribbling rush, but was not supported, and Shaw, gathering up the ball, passed to Turner, to McDonald, who crossed the line. Cranston missed the posts. Matangi 3, Rovers 0.

On resuming J. Shaw took the ball well and passed to D. Shaw, to Turner, to Campbell, who scored under the posts. Cranston converted. Matangi 8, Rovers 0.

Shaw got the ball from the scrum, and passing out smartly Matangi backs were soon in action, and play was transferred to Rovers’ 25, where Cranston tried to pot without success, Rovers being forced. Libeau secured the ball from the kick-off and transferred to Robinson, to Shaw, to McDonald who scored. Cranston with his kick struck the bar. Half-time sounded with the score: Matangi 24, Rovers 0. The second half saw Rovers putting a lot more life into their play. Appleby carried play to Maroons’ 25. Here Rovers were awarded a free-kick and McMillan was equal to the occasion, placing a fine goal. Rovers 3, 'Matangi 24.

From the kick-off Cooper passed to Matakoe who was brought down at the corner. Keeping up the pressure Rovers had Matangi defending all they knew how. McMillan eventually got the ball away to Young, who crossed the line at the corner. McMillan kicked a beautiful goal from a difficult angle. Rovers 8, Matangi 24. Matangi got to work from the kickoff and Campbell evaded the Rovers’ back and scored. Cranston failed with the kick. Matangi 27, Rovers 8. The play at this stage was very fast and open. From a free-kick awarded Rovers McMillan followed up fast and passing to Appleby the latter scored. McMillan took the kick, but the angle was too difficult.
