BOWLING

TWO CHALLENGE MATCHES SPECTACULAR FINISHES Taking advantage of the lovely afternoon, about fifty players took part in the games at the bowling greens on Saturday. Among those present were several visitors, including Mr E. J. Wilkinson, ex-Mayor of Cambridge, who received a hearty welcome from •all his old friends. Beside, the draw games, two challenge matches were played, viz., Ferns and Stars. For the Ferns, Low, T. McLarnon, Mclvbr, Fisher (s) beat the holders, Easter, Speight, Palmer, RichsUds (s). Fisher's team held the lead all the way but on the nineteenth head the score read Fisher Id, Richards 16, which still left the holders a chance. Richards' team made a bold effort to hold the Ferns, but being three down at such a critical stage of the game left nothing for it but to play for big things. However, Fisher's team played right up to form and scored on the last two heads. The game ended Fisher 25, Richards 16.

The Stars match was even more exciting. The holders, G. E. Clark, Armstrong, E. Webber, O Toole (s) 19 beat the challengers, G. B. Simpson, N. Hill, Cowling, Butler (s) 18. At the 21st head the scores were 18 all, which necessitated another head being played. When the skips went to the head, Butler was lying 4. O'Toole's first bowl trailed the kitty, his own bowl going dead and leaving Butler lying one, with the kitty about eight feet from the ditch. With his second bowl, Butler drew another fine shot close up, and with such a long head looked every inch a winner, but O'Toole, amidst great excitement and applause from tho onlookers, who had remained behind to.watch the finish, drew the shot dead with his last bowl.

In the other games, Davys, Muller, Carter, Smalcs (s) 20 beat Cox, Black, Bridges, Edwin James (s) 19; E. C. Wallis, Hodgson, Edgar James, Thorpe (s) 27 beat H. Webber, McLean, Condor, Wilkinson (s) 20; Kemp, J. Wallis, Columb, Cormack. (s) 25 beat Taylor, Hart, Harris, Henderson (s) 15; Miller, H. Lewis, Hair, Hamilton (s) 27 beat Anderson, Bryee, Vickers, Pearce (s) 16.

Those players taking part in the competition games are requested to see that their matches arc played by the 20th January, to enable the Match Committee to make the second draw.
