The Australian and New Zealand Press Association understands that the scheme for the purchase by Tooley Street interests of the whole of the British Governments butter stocks is not likely to materialise. Another proposal is that the Australian and New Zealand Governments should purchase the British Government's stocks at £5 per cwt for New Zealand and £4 4s for Australian, and hold it until autumn if necessary. Sir James Allen, High Commissioner for New Zealand, and Mr T. M. Shepherd, Acting Commonwealth High Commissioner, have requested the Board of Trade to delay action until replies have been received from Australia and New Zealand.

The trade generally approves of the alternative suggestion. One leading importer says: "Only thus can disaster be prevented. If Government stocks amounting to nearly a million boxes aro thrown on the market at sacrifice prices,, not. only will the value of the new butter now (arriving-bo still-'fur-ther reduced, but prices for the reremainder of the season will be brought to a level which must entail heavy, if not ruinous, losses to the Australian and New Zealand producers. The Board of Trade Food Department announces that in view of the large arrivals of free butter it is no longer possible to continue the system of fixing prices weekly or fortnightly for its stocks. Therefore the butter committee has been disbanded. The Department is prepared to consider offers from first-hand buyers • for outright purchases, and will also consider applications for sale on a commission basis. The Department estimates the present value of its butter as approximately: New Zealand first grade 130 s, second 120 s; Australian first 112 s, second 100 s; Argentine first 100 s, second 90s.
