VALUABLE PRIZES OITERED BY' iY.KW ZEALAND ALLIANCE During tlie war very exhaustive researches concerning the action, of alcohol upon the human body and mind, were undertaken by the British Medical Research Council at the request of the Liquor Control Board. These researches were mainly prompted'by the necessity for maximum efficiency being assured in the production of munitions. The fruits of these researches, blended with the results of previous exhaustive scientific investigation, have been summarised and embodied in Special Education Report No. 13 entitled “Alcohol and the Human Body and Mind” issued by the Education Authorities, as a syllabus for instruction on this subject to be given in all the State schools. It is a matter for congratulation that New Zealand has probably the most up-to-date syllabus in existence for school instruction on this subject. The N.Z. Alliance with a view to stimulating interest amongst scholars, students, and the general public, has arranged a competition in which very substantial cash prizes arc offered for essays written after a study of this Special Education Report No. 13. There is a special class for journalists. The competition is divided into Senior, Intermediate, and Junior groups. The Senior group consists of six classes, namely: —• Class I—Open to all students of university colleges. Class 2 —Open to all training college students, pupil teachers and probationers. Class 3—Open to ~ all certificated teachers. Class 4—Open to all students of W.E A. and workers’ educational institutions. Class s—Opens—Open to all working journalists. Class 6—Open to all over 21 years of age 'not included in the above. In these classes the prizes range from 20 guineas down to 1 guinea. The Intermediate group is:— Class 7 —Open to students attending high schools, technical schools, collegiate schools, or any school of similar standard, public or private. Class B—Open to all under 21 years of age not included in the above. Prizes in these classes from 10 guineas to 1 guinea. , In addition to the above, a special championship prize of 30 guineas will be offered for the best essay in Classes 1 to 8, which makes 50 guineas as a possible first prize. The length of the essays must not exceed 5000 words in the Senior and 3000 words in the Intermediate group. Awards will be made by independent judges according to the quality of the essavs, no names or addresses appear-

ing on the essays. , The total amount of prizes in these two groups is £345. Every applicant for conditions of competition will receive a copy of the Special Education Report No. 13. .Entries close on December 31st, next: The Junior group classes tire open to primary school scholars in Standards Xy V., and VI., with prizes ranging from 5 guineas to 10/0, and a championship award of 5 guineas for the best essay. The Education districts arc taken as a basis and divided into 14 separate competition districts, in each of wjhieli, prizes as above indicated, arc offered. Essays in this group must not excejd 1500 words and arc to be sent in not later than December 22nd. Prizes in this section total £431. There are no charges and no entry fees'.
