THE LEAGUE GAME AUCKLAND EOVEESBEATEN 16 POINTS TO .14. The match between City Rovers (Auckland) and Cambridge, played at Victoria Square last Saturday afternoon, was a memorable contest and a more interesting League game has not b 4 een witnessed in Cambridge for someconsiderable time. Throughout the match was of a clean, open character arid the large attendance of spectators was often'treated to a meritorious exhibition on the part of both sides. The play was speedy from start, to finish and except, in ability to take full advantage of scoring opportunities the Cambridge players were little, if any, superior to their opponents. Play of a give and take nature followed until Paki roheveded. From a scrum City broke through but the rush was stopped by Stewart. Peekham after passing to Daganall secured the ball again being brought up by McMillan. City broke away but inocked on. From a scrum City broke through and Hawkes scored tit the corner. Miller's, attempt at goal missed. Paki ran down field, but was collared fry Stewart City following up with a fine passing bout. Cambridge broke away and ran out near the corner flag. City relieved and the game was again

carried down field. Cambridge broke through a little later and Paki relieved but came in contact with Watt who was slightly disabled. City marked and kicked well down field with the half scores at City Rovers (Auckland) 6, Cambridge 5. A Close Tussle Wethercll opened the last half with a kick for City and play was taken down field but Cambridge returned, and Pau following up regained the ball and ran clean through scoring under the post; McMillan- converted. - Susstained attacks from both teams wore then the order, Stewart finally scoring far out. McMillan’s shot at goal hit tho post. Cambridge again pressed hard, but Wetherell got away and almost scored. Cambridge relieved. The progress of the match was here impeded by an injury to Churches who was compelled to retire for a time, being temporarily replaced by Cornaga. Cambridge were pressing hard when Stanley received injuries and had to retire. From a serum the ball came out into mid-field and City looked very like scoring but a finely executed passing movement was stopped by Pau. Collett relieved by kicking well up field. Peckham secured the ball which went out to Wilson and to Peckham Avho scored under the post. Peckham missed his shot at goal. . Close play resulted and Peckham kicked down field. A few seconds later Cambridge started another passing bout, but their opponents relieved with a kick well down field and a score seemed imminent. Mr Freest Asher, the secretary of the visiting team, was also present, and in the course of a brief address made the interesting announcement that the Cambridge. team was the first to defeat the Auckland City Rovers Senior team this year. The usual toasts were honoured and musical items were contributed by tue Town Hall orchestra, and Messrs Neil Blackburn, H. Francis (Auckland), Albert fffirnaga, J. Hawes (Auckland), L. young, Kenneth Impett, and J. Davis. The proceedings terminated with cheers for Mr Asher and the officials of tho League game in Cambridge and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” THE RUGBY GAME SCHOOLBOYS ’ MATCHES Leamington defeated Roto-o-rangi, Kaipaki and Monavale combined by S to 3 last Saturday. Hastie and N. Morse scored tries for Leamington, Hastie converting one. Warren scored for the combined team, which pul up a good game in spite of ,

being a player short. Warren, Cunningham and McHoav were conspicuous throughout. For Leamington May, Hastie, A. Blow, Gill, Atkinson, and Colquhoun put in some good work, while N. Morse and Brittain showed improved form. Mr H. I. Blow was referee.
