ELECTRIC LIGHT

INSTALLATION AT LEAMINGTON RED LETTER DAY FOR WAIKATO A function of very considerable interest to this district, and also to the whole of the Waikato, took place at Leamington on .Thursday evening last, when the firs-t instalment of electric current from Horaliora, so far as the Waikato is concerned, was turned on. The occasion was fittingly celebrated by the holding of a social gathering (under the auspices of the Leamington Town Board), in the Leamington Town Hall, tho accommodation bf whjch was taxed to' its utmost capacity. /. Mr W. White (chairnnyt of the Leamington Town Board) Xxi opening the proceedings, said thy! was a red letter day for the Waikato, and they were naturally/ elated Jro see the fruits of their labouii in the direction of getting electric iLht/nd power. He considered, the Power Board had done vt|y well to get current available so soon, and tho contractors were also deserving of a word of praise. Turning on the “Juice.”

Mrs White then turned on the switch and the hall, which had pieviously been dimly lighted with poor gas lights, was immediately flooded with a magnificent light from nine powerful electric lamps. This nas the signal for an. outburst of hearty cheering- - Mr Iveeley, senr.,. introduced to the audience as , *

‘ « The Father of Leamington, ’ ’ expressed his great pleas-uro at havingseen the consummation of their efforts in the direction of getting light. He prophesied a splendid future for Leamington, which ho- painted in glowing colours, and for the Waikato. Apologies At this stage Mi" ©Hard (secretary to /he Town Board) read apologies for absence and congratulations from the Hon. Mr Coates ('Minister for Public Works), Messrs Hockley and Bollard. M’s.P., and Mr Reid 1 (chaipnan of tho Waipa County Council)'. History of the Pbwer Eoard Mr Mervyn Wells' (chairman of the Cambridge Power Board),, outlined the doings of the Board' from its inauguration. The Board had no precedent to work by, which made their work difficult. However, they liad ; been helped considerably by the Public Works Department. They were in the happy position of having secured their loan money at 5* per cent. The Board had engaged Messrs Turnbull and! Tones Ltd., as contractors, on a commission basis —a much better bargain' than the Government had made when installing tho Coleridge scheme. The secret of success in the whole scheme was to get light and power cheaply, and the Board had spared no pains in that endeavour. Mr Wells said the transformers were aow on their way out, and lie saw no reason why these should not be put in by the end of May. The speaker dwelt briefly on the many advantages that district residents would' derive- from electricity, and urged all who washed to share in these advantages to get wired up without delaj-.-Mr H. A. Young,. JVT.F. for Waikato, said congratulations were due to Mr Wells and the Pbwer Board, and to the district for-being; the. first part of the Waikato- to have electric power from Horahora. Mr Young stated that the Government was supplying the power at Horahora-,, bUt power boards had been set, up. to see- to the distribution of the power. The speaker said he felt sure if their work had been left in the hands of the Government they would not have got the light already. The Board! deserved congratulation for pushing on with its work so expeditiously. Seeing that Auckland was. raising, money in London at Gh per cent, with a sinking fund of per cent., the Cambridge Board had been most fortunate in getting its loan at 5:1 per cent. Visitors” Congratulations

Messrs J. P. Bailey (chairman of the Waikato County Council and Huntly Town Board), and.Jas. Anderson (the chairman of the Matamata County Council),, extended! their hearty congratulations to the Leamington people and the local Power Board. Mr Anderson said the Thames Valley Board had decided to go to the Lon lon market- to secure money to push their scheme through.

Mr S. Lewis (Mayor elec-t of Cambridge), Mr R. Reynolds (Pukekuru Road Board), and Mr J. S. Fisher also offered their congratulations. Mr Lewis said if the lighting of the hall that evening was a sample of the goods the Cambridge Power Board was going to doliver, then all would agree, they were making good. Music and Supper During tho evening songs were given by Messrs Fred. Baker, J. W. Cocks, N. Blackburn, and Boonstra, and a recitation by Mr Les. Wilkinson, all the items being much enjoyed. At the close of the social a bountiful and appetising supper was provided by the ladies, after which the floor was cleared, and an enjoyable dance indulged in.
