OPENING PRACTICE MATCHES i KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED ROTO-O-RANGI OUTCLASSES CITY Several practice matches were played on Saturday afternoon and the ropective teams showed considerable enthusiasm in spite of the fact that in one or two cases only scratch teams could be collected. Several new players have come forward this season and a high standard of football seems assured. Saturday’s teams were naturally lacking in form, but some good play resulted nevertheless. The cadets of the 68th company who were matched against Leamington at the Domain ground fared rather badly, the final score being Leamington 21, Cadets nil. During the first spell Leamington scored two tries which were not converted and had the best of the game after the interval, adding seven more tries. Hautapu v. Leamington The teams were Hautapu: Shostrom, Craig, Allwill, Thompson, Burke (3), Tyson, Hagan (2), Parkinson and Yosper. Leamington: Hemmingway, Tucker, McGill, Thorpe, Tatten, Abbott, Paterson (2), Hall, Kelly and Burke. The finishing score was Leamington 4, Hautapu 3. Although a scratch team play was consistently good throughout. Hemmingway placed a neat drop kick for Leamington. Burke scored for Hautapu. Mr C. Dench, senr., acted as referee. City Rovers v. SURPRISE OVER DECISION Footballers in Australia arc amazed at the decision of the New Zealand Rugby League not to send a team to Sydney this year because the NewSouth Wales League has agreed to pay the members of the team a ceri-**d Aveekly sum and divide the profits of the tour among the players. This action, it is hbld, is a breach of the New Zealand constitution. Athletic authorities on the other side point out that the rules of all amateur bodies permit professional and amateur footballers to play together; also that tho League’s constitution used to provide only travelling and hotel expenses for amateurs, but following on the decision of the recent conference of amateur bodies, it had been decided f) allow in addition out-of-pocket expenses, as has been made permissible by the amateur bodies. A Sydney secretary is positive that when the true position is explained to the New Zealand League, the latter will adhere to its original decision to participate in the triangular series of matches arranged for June in order to enable the best available side to bo sent to#England.
