METHODISM

CAMBRIDGE CIRCUIT QUARTERLY

MEETING

The quarterly meeting held at St. Paul’s, Cambridge, Methodist .Schoolroom on Friday evening was well attended, the number of delegates present being 23. R-ev. J. D. McArthur presided, and a refreshing interest was evinced throughout the proceedings. The reports of the various organisations were presented by the workers and proved to be most encouraging, viz Sunday School, Young Worshippers’ League, Senior and Junior Christian Endeavour Societies, Young Men’s ana Young Women’s Bible Classes and the newly formed Band of Hope. Of the latter it was reported that 120 were present at the last meeting and that 40 pledges to total abstinence had been taken.

The Church membership had made » nett increase of 11 despite six removals. The minister, Rev. J. D. McArthur, was cordially and unanimously invited to remain a third year in the circuit, several delegates speaking in eulogistic terms of Mr McArthur’s faithful ministry, and of Mrs McArthur’s helpfulness in all Church matters.

In accepting the invitation Mr McArthur expressed his appreciation of the co-operation of the workers through out the circuit, hut stressed the depleted number of local preachers, two having removed during the quarter. The appointment of delegates ~to Synod resulted in Messrs C. H. Bycroft and R. Melville being elected, with Messrs C. Roberts and E. J. Easter as substitutes. Messrs M. Butler and A. W. Gane were re-appointed auditors. The meeting expressed its appreciation of the work of the local preachers in a vote of thanks, and the services of Messrs F. and ,E. Hill (who have removed to Taumarunui) were placed on record. The sustained and whole-hearted interest shown in Church matters by Mr G. A. Clark led the minister to suggest that the time was opportune for an expression of 'appreciation. Various gifts had quite recently been made to St. Paul’s Church and the Parsonage by Mr Clark, and the meeting’s thanks was given by acclamation. Mr Clark, in responding made reference to the services rendered in the footpath construction by Messrs Simpson and S. Cowling.

It was resolved to sanction the oTectrie wiring of the Church and Parsonage in anticipation of the power being available .and to authorise the trustees to proceed with the work. The choirmaster (Mr E. J. Easter) reported that the choir had entered for the Methodist Choir’s Competition at Hamilton on Labour Day, and stated that a choir social gathering would be held on the 20th inst., when the competition music would be rendered. It was hoped by this social to meet part of t*he competition travelling expenses of the choir. The sympathetic co-opera tion of the leaders of the Church is an inspiration to the choir.

The return of Mr Hooker to the Quarterly Meeting after his trip to England was made the occasion of a cordially expressed welcome hy Rev. J. D. McArthur.

The special denominational claims for collections for the ensuing quarter will include Home Missions, the North Island Orphanage and the Local Preachers’ Mutual Aid. The arrangements wore left in the minister’s hands.

Subsequent to the meeting the delegates partook of refreshments serves by Mcsdam.es Gane, Palmer and Arnold.

It was agreed that the next quarterly meeting should be hold at St. Paul’s Cambridge.
