COMES OFF WORST

CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN TROUBLE. Mr Charlie Chaplin, the film “star’* had a fight with Mr Louis Mayer, Mrs Chaplin's manager and .advisor, in the lobby of the Alexandria Hotel at Lps Angeles, recently. Witnesses of the encounter in the hotel lobby i agree that Mr Chaplin came off second, and that his nose and the rest of his face bear witness that Mr Mayer’s fists are more substantial than the custard pies Mr Chap lih is accustomed to receive in the face in his film comedies. It appears that when Mr Mayer entered the hotel ho was approached by Mr Chaplin, who demanded that the manager should remove his glasses. Mr Mayer acceded to the request , arid Mr Chaplin swung his fist in the general direction of the promoter’s jaw. But the latter dodged, and landed his own fist on Mr Chaplin’s nose, sending the. comedian to the floor. Hotel employees interfered and escorted Mr Chaplin to his room, while Mr Mayer left the hotel. While this was happening at Los Angeles, Mrs Mildred Harris Chaplin who is estranged from her husband, was dancing a fox-trot with the Prince of Wales 800 miles away at Coronado Beach, the resort near San Diego. The dance was given by the Mayor of San Diego, Mr Widle. Mrs Chaplin has just, finished her dance with the Prince and another with Lord Monntbattcn when she was informed by newspaper reporters of the row between her husband and Mr Mayer. She exhibited only mild concern. Asked for her impression of >the Prince, she welcomed the change of subject. She replied vivaciously: The Prince is a nice, clean-cut boy, and he is certainly a clever dancer. I enjoyed every minute of our dance together.” ' ') ■
