PRICE OF BREAD.
REASON FOR INCREASE
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, this day,
, It is announced by the President of the Board of Trade (Hon. Lee) that the Board had given careful consideration to the statement made by the deputation of bakers to the Minister a week ago, with reference to the price of bread. Full enquiry had been made by the Board respecting the accuracy of the position as presented by the bakers as to what would be a’fair and reasonable increase in the price of bread. In consequence of the increased cost of production as decided by the Bakers Board, it was decided to sanction an increase in price of the two pound loaf as follows: North Island, cash over counter, present price sid, new price 6d; delivered, present price 6-Jd, new price 61d. South Island, cash over counter, present price 5Jd, new price 51d; delivered present price 53-d, new price 6d. 1
This means North Island counter sales will be increased by half-penny, and delivery sales, and-all sales in the South Island by one farthing. The increased prices will be chargeable from Monday.
