It was at the Customs House, and the passengers’ luggage was being carefully examined for any traces of articles on which duty could be exacted. One’s lady’s boxes were being subjected to a particularly lengthy scrutiny when suddenly an official gave a little cry of triumph. “Madam/’ he exclaimed angrily, “you said that your trunk contained nothing but wearing apparel. What do you call these?” and he pointed grimly to some bottles of whisky that reposed at the bottom of the box. “Oh, those!” replied the lady sweetly, “those are my husband’s ‘night-
caps.’ ”
