DESPERATE RIGHTING IN THE CAUCASUS.

PETEOGKAD, April 17

A communique states: There has been desperate fighting in the coastal region of the Caucasus. We drove the Turks, who were supported by artillery, fi-mi a strongly organised position of great natural strength on the left bank of Kara Dere, 16 miles east of Trobizonrl. We arc ‘■energetically pursuing this force of the enemy. Eepeated attacks were made Vy the eneiny in the direction of Baiburt, 50 miles south of Trebizoud. We reprdsed all attacks, inflicting great loss cn the enemy.

Late on Friday the French launched a lively attack on the German positions, south of Douaumont. They occupied parts of the enemy trenches. Two hundred Germans were taken prist ners.
