CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE

WILLARD DEFEATS MORAY

•Tcsh Willard (holder id the World’s heavyweight championship), 2P vears of age, 6ft. Tin., in a ten round bout defeated Frank Moran (challenger), 30 years, G feet 7 inches on points recently. At the conclusion of the match it was announced that Wilhml broke his hand in the third round. The following are tlie details:—

Hound I—Willard Jabbed Moran with his left on the face, and the latter retaliated with three, blows delivered at the body, but W illard blocked them. Moran swung his right and left at Willard’s neck, but'received a hard from the right in the. face. M ran missed delivering one from the right. From the clinch Willard tore loose, and landed hi« right and left on the head. Thfe round ended in Willard’s favour. Round 2—Willard took the aggressive, but Moran came back. Willard followed Moran round the ring, and drove a right hook to the eye, and batteied the body > Moran was helpless in the clinches. The champion staggered Moran with a loft to the face. Willard’s round. *

Eouml 3 —Willard smashed his right to Moran’s body, doubling him tip. Moran’s savage swings did not reach Willard's jaw. Willard jabbed Moran till Moran grew shaky. Moran swung the left to the body. Moran’s round. Hound 4—Willard uppercut Moran to the body with right and left. Moran hooked the left to the body and the left to Willard’s jaw. Wiliard- kept stalling Moran, and jarred him on the right of the jaw. Willard split Moran’s eyebrow. Willard’s round.

Hound s—Willard battered his man with right and left and uppercut to the jaw. Moran tried to penetrate Willard’s guard with body bl«s, and rushed him to the ropes. The-latter dosed Moran’s left eye Willard’s round. Hound (i—Willard tore into Moran, battering him w-ith his right and left. Moran smashed Willard with right and left on the jaw. Willard apparent Moran, opening his eyebrow again, and jarred him with the right on the jaw, ami uppercut liim till ho wavered on bis feet, Moran running away at the bell. Willard’s round. Hound 7—AVillard started after Moran like a wildman, and beat him all over the ring. Moran being helpless, and clinching, and Willard’s blood poured down his chest. Moran was warned against fouling. He swung wildly,catching Willard under the jaw, and dazed him for the moment. Willard’s round.

Bound B—Willard kept jabbing- Moran on the face, and the latter was bleeding from a number of cuts. Moran swung two rights to Willard’s jaw. The champion appeared to be winded. Honours even.

Bound 9—Moran rushed from his corner, and landed right and left on Willard ’s neck. Willard used his left steadily. -Moran scored two swings to the jaw. and repeated, Willard hooked Moran to the ribs and with a left upper cut lifted the challenger oft' his feet. Moran swung to the .jaw and Willard uppercut. Honours even.

Bound 10—Willard used the left jab almost exclusively. Moran swung the right to the jaw and left to the body. Willard battered Moran, and the latter came back gamely. Willard uppercut Moran to the face and body, and Moran sent a right and left to the jaw, and Willard retaliated. Willard’s round.

The premiership title was“ not at stake, but it is interesting to note that this was Jess Willard’s first figlit since he secured the title by defeating Jack Johnson by a knock-out in the 26th round at Havana, Cuba, on April 15th, 19.13.
