ANZAC DAY,

T!ie first anniversary of the great achievement of the New Zealanders and Australians in effecting a landing •at Gallipoli will he celebrated on Tuesday next. April With. Tins feat will, for the people of Australasia, be for all time one of the great outstanding events of the war. "Whatever may bo our opinion as to the wisdom or otherwise of the landing on the J’eninsula the fact for ns remains that the part onr men had to play in such a hazardous undertaking was worthy of the erenf-istock from which we spring, and whatever fears there may have been that there were not wanting prior to the war signs of decay in the nation will have been entirely dispelled by the wonderful and imperishable deeds that onr men accomplished at Anzac. It is fitting, therefore, that the first anniversary should be universally' celebrated. There can be no two opinions that the Prime Minister has struck that higher note which the occasion calls for, and •me which will find a response from oiio end of the Dominion to the other. The expressed desire of the Government that the day should not he marked by the holding of sports or similar forma

of entertainments will, needless to say, lie respected. It is not an occasion that calls for boisterous rejoicing- The feelings of pride that we all have at the- thrilling deeds of "our boys,” are mingled in too many homes with sadder memories—memories that time alone can render less poignant. It is not a time for mafficking, and if the Prime Minister's request is taken up locally it wculd be fitting that a united service be held in the Town Hall. If such a service were fixed for a suitable hour in the afternoon the people could unite in a more fitting commemoration than by each denomination holding a separate service.
