An Interesting Suggestion.
The failing off in the American met supply has induced a writer in “Everbyody’s Magazine” to make an interesting suggestion. He agrees tht meat is not only dear, but, relatively speaking, scarce. According to Government figures there were 30,030,000 Deef cattle in the United States on Janua-y Ist, 1913, were as on January Ist, 1907, there were 515,566,000. It appears that there are 30,000,000 acres of Indian reservations. occupied by 300,000 Indians, and the suggestion is that, if possible, the American Indian should again becomde as he was at first, the great American herdsman. At present there are large areas of prime Indian lands used merely to graze thousands of unsaleable active ponies, “scrub cattle,” goats, and “burros.” The new Commissioner of Indian Affairs, who is'a scientific agriculturist, is taking steps with a view to helping the Indian to breed high-class cttle, wich, it is urged, will not only benefit the Indians, but will largely increase the nation’s food supply. In the matter of hardy strck the Indian is unequalled, but he needs instruction and direction if the industry of stockrearing is to be placed on a sound footing.
