The Waikato Independent. THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1914. IMPERIAL TRAVEL FOR ADMINISTRATORS.

As an outcome of the proposal made at the Imperial Conference of 1907 by Hon., Alfred Deakin that “grand tours of the Empire” should be undertaken by the permanent officials of the Home Government, it may be recalled that Sir Charles Lucas, late head of the Dominions Department of the Colonial Office, visited, five years ago, those great sections of the Empire with which he had to deal officially. That admirable precedent is being copied by his successor,' Sir Hartmann Just, who is also Permanent Secretary of the Imperial Conference. Sir Hartmann left England with the Dominions Royal Commissioners for South Africa. The projected, programme is that, after staying- a week in the Union, he will proceed to Australia and New Zealand for a month’s round of visits to the capital cities, finishing up at Hobart. The homeward voyage will include a short stay in Fiji, the headquarters of the High Commissioner in the Pacific. In the course of his journey from Vancouver, 8.C., across Canada, many opportunities will be offered to Sir Hartmann for renewing his former . acquaintance with many of the leaders of Canadian opinion and her representative chiefs' in commerce and industry. He will be away from home altogether about six months.
