Cambridge Borough Council.

Ihe ordinary i monthly meeting [of the Cambridge Borough Council was held last evening there , being present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr M. Wells) and Crs. S. Cowling, T. Middelton, S. Lewis, H. Alan Bell, C. H. Bycroft, J. Bryce, R. W, Hunter, and W- G. Care.

—Works Committee’s Report.— The Works Committee reported having had specifications drawn for a road giving access through Dougherty’s pit to the gravel reserve. The Engineer reported having arranged with Messrs Niven and Co., for erection of gas holder for £IOO. - Approved. The Engineer was autnorised to have swamp drain cleaned out. An arrangement with Rev. Father Murphy re some work on footpath in Cnapel street was agreed to.

Cr. Bell was authorised to have Lake street north of Queen street reformed and graded. The footpath at the National Hotel is to be improved, the owners of the building to pay for work done within their boundary.

b The Engineer was authorised to employ two extra me a for this month. Wilson’s offer of 5 tons of cement was accepted with thanks, and experimental! work will be carried out near the fountain.

Bowen street, between Thornton road and Tayjor street, is to be prepared for gravelling. Repairs are to be done to Princes street.

Consideration was deferred of an offer, through Cr. Middleton, to form the corner of Queen and Hall streets.

| The Borough Engineer’s report and the recommendations therein were approved. Washouts at. Duke street hill were authorised to be repaired. Attention of the Financial Committee was drawn to the question of ’provision in the ■ estimates for painting Victoria Bridge. —Correspondence.— An invitation to the Mayor and Councillors to attend the revi w at ; Hautapu on May 13th was received, and accepted. - His Worship read the itinerary of General Sir lan Hamilton’s visit here, and explained the various items. In connection with the public reception he anticipated the expenses would be met by the small cnarge for adraissi n. The secretary to the Department of Agriculture "wrote re noxious weeds, saying the several weeds had been gazetted as noixuas ’within tie Borough. Re a’remission of duty m tar sprayer, the Secretary for Customs .wrote stating it was not pr po ed to provide i for a refund on tar spraying machinery. / Cr. Lewis considered the . Government should assist the local bodies in making better roads. The cry was made throughout the country that the Government was doing ; Wonderful things to h Jp the local Dodiei. It was a peculiar anomaly that road making machinery was charged d -ty. The Clerk was instructed to again approach the Government for a refund on road-making machinery. A letter was, read from the Cambridge Beautifying Society asking that : only a nominal charge be made for the use of the Town Hall on the fccasion , of their concert,—His Worship moved that the charge De the same as at last concert.—Carried. Cr. Bell asked should not the Beautifying Society render a statement of accounts, Council was supporting the Society?—Members expressed - the opinion that the Council bad no interest in the Society beyond the £SO granted some time ago. Mr Geo. Dickinson wrote asking the Council to accept a portrait of T himself in commemoration of his occupancy of the Mayoral chair from 1910-1913. —A let er of thanks to be ; forwarded to Mr Dickinson. The Finance Committee’s report was read, the overdraft showing the balance at date £3964 6s 7d. Accounts amounting to £251 were passed for payment. t Jin referring to the report, His " Worship said thanks were due. to Messrs Souter and Go., in connection with the present of over £2O worth of cement from Messrs Wilson and ■ Co., the makers. Further, Mr John Wilson one of the principals, had come to Cambridge to confer with the Borough Engineer regarding the most suitable locality and method for utilising the cement. Councillors expressed appreciation ofjjthe Cement Co.’s donation. The Minister for Defence wrote asking for suggestions re employing conscientious objectors to the Defence regulations.—The Minister is to be informed that"the Council cannot entertain the idea of employing unwilling workers. Cr. Cowling is to arrange for stripping the gravel pit, ready for working. .

The. Building Permits Committee /• reported having received an applica- . tion from the Loyal Duke of Cambridge Lodge of Oddfellows, for a proposed wooden addition to their hall, which is within the brick area. The Committee had no recommendation to make.—A majority of Councillors favored adhering to the bylaws. Several permits-for buildings were approved. The municipal swimming baths have , }been do ed, and the keys are now in jthe possession ot the Borough officials. Cr. Cowling asked that the prom- • sed lamp at corner of Thornton road I nd be erected,—Con-.-aderatiqii deferred.
