When the Zulus saw the burghers leaving Middleburg for the Rand, emissaries Were sent to Zululaod to report that the time was opportune for a revolt, as the whites were warring with each other. The emissaries were arrested before they reached Zululand. There was evidence that they intended to murder the only whites remaining in the vicinity. The Government sent a large patrol to Middleburg, aud warned the Zulus that the first signs of violence would mean that the offendeis would be shot.
