NEWS IN BRIEF.
Crighton Riddle, aged eight years, was drowned in Ongarue River. An old Auckland man named Barrett died as the result of injuries received by a horse kicking him. On the passage of the Marama from Dunedin to the Bluff, a man named Hugh Dalgleish jumped overboard and was drowned. A brilliant meteor flashed across the sky over the City of Auckland on Monday night, and burst with a noise as of diatant thunder. The Commissioner of Crown Lands stales that he hopes the Te Arai Estate, which was recently acquired for closer settlement by the Government, will be thrown open for selection early in March. The second Auckland wool sales of the season opened on Tuesday, prices being fully lower than the closing rates of the November sales. Wool which last year realised 10d per lb. was freely passed in at 6£d.
Cabinet has decided to reserve certain areas of timber along the route of the Noith Island Main Trunk Railway line. A special report is to be prepared on the subject. Mr Kensington, the UnderSecretary for Lands, has been instructed to report on the question of reserving certain areas of bush along the Wanganui River.
