ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA. THIRD TEST MATCH. COLONIALS’ WONDERFUL SCORE. | BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.] (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Adelaide, Jan. 14. The Australians resumed their second innings to-day and made a splendid stand against the Englishmen’s bowling. The great feature of the innings was Hartigan (106, not out) and Kill’s (105 not out) partnership. When stumps were drawn for the day the score stood at 397 for seven wickets. Received Jan. 15, 9.40 p.m. January 15. When the test match was resumed to-day, the weather was terribly hot, without a breath of wind. Hartigan had a couple of lives, and then was easily taken at point, his partnership with Hill having put on 243, beating any previous record in test matches. Carter joined Hill, and runs continued to come apace, the Australians having a lead of 400 when the luncheon adjournment was taken. Shortly after resuming, Hill brought up his century and a half as a result of about live hours’ batting, but a little later was caught right hand, high up, by Gunn. Despite his indisposition, the retiring batsman had given a magnificent display, which was probably the best effort in bis brilliant career. The score then stood at 9 for 501. With Saunders’ advent the finish was in sight, and at 506 the innings closed. Hartigan (116) and Hill (160) received a tremendous ovation. Requiring 429 to win, England opened very badly, and it appears as if the task was beyond them. When time was called they had lost five wickets for 139, still requiring 289 to stave off defeat. CAMBRIDGE v. TE WAIKATO SANATORIUM. An interesting match between teams representing the above was played at Victoria Square yesterday afternoon in the presence of a fair number of the public. The home team was captained by Heath and the visitors by Kavanagh. The latter went to the wickets first and succeeded in compiling 48, and in their second innings they put on 40, a total of 88. Cambridge, who were minus the services of several of their best players, did not make a very good stand in their first innings, 37 being their score, but they retrieved themselves well in their second innings and piled up 60, which brought their total up to 97, thus winning the match by 9 runs. For the visitors, A. J. Shepherd, Moore and Kavanagh were the most prominent batsmen, the firstnamed registering the highest score made during the day, viz., 23, Heath 21, C. Haysmith 19, R. Haysmith 13, and F. Beck 9 were the mainstay of the home team. The bowlers to show good form were E. Haysmith, R. Brindle and F.
