Wilkinson, Treasurer of the Technical School Fund, said he had collected over £IOO, and there was still £2O to come from the Waikato County Council. Resolved, to write the treasurer of the fund in Hamilton and urge that he get in the amounts promised, in order that no time time might be lost in having the schools established in the 'two towns.

The District High School Committee met on Thursday evening, when there were present—Messrs Arnold Wilkinson (chairman), E. J. Wilkinson, R. Carr, A. J. Beuth, J. Christie, C. H. Treadgold and F. J. Sanders. Six applications were received for the position of master of the secondary department, in succession to Mr A. A. Kenny. It was decided to submit the names of Messrs E. W. Shanahan, aged 24, classified D 4, and H. J. Wooller, aged 27, classified D2, to the Board, with a strong recommendation that the former should be appointed. Miss Florence E. Day, of Glenraore, was appointed to replace Miss McElwain on the teaching staff of the primary department of the school. The latter lady will assist in the secondary department. The secretary of the Eechabite Lodge wrote intimating that his Society intended to hold a popular concert in Cambridge on 11th February, and the co-operation of the Committee was solicited. He stated that the proceeds would be handed over to the technical school fund. Messrs Beuth and Sanders were deputed to assist in promoting the success of the entertainment. After some discussion, it was resolved to arrange for a school excursion to Te Aroha next month. One account—£l 4s 9d, from Messrs Souter and Co.— was passed for payment.

Members of the Cambridge Croquet Club are requested to meet the committhe on the lawn on Wednesday next, at 3.30 p.m., to arrange a tournament for the season. In connection with the Waikato Central Show, to be held in March next, Mr H. W. Mackerell has donated a special prize of £2 2s for the best filly or mare in the draught classes, stud animals excluded. The general impression in this district is that Mr Herries, M.H.E. will contest the new electorate of Tauranga, of which Cambridge forms no inconsiderable part. Those “in the know," however, state that he has no such intention, but has decided to go up for the Bay of Plenty seat. v We are pleased to note that progress is being made with the North Island Egg-laying Competition. The shares are now going off freely, 230 out of the 300 having been taken up. As soon as the provisional directors get £250 of the capital placed, steps will at once be taken to call for tenders for pens and yards, and to make general arrangements for carrying out the competition, which will commence on the Ist May. This is an object worthy of encouragement, and any person wishing to give the movement a lift should take a few shares in the company, which-is expected to be a paying concern. - Great dissatisfaction was expressed in Cambridge at the apathy of the Auckland authorities, in not taking prompt steps to put on a launch to carry mails and passengers, to connect the railway service and restore communication with Auckland. The result of the delay, in restoring communication, was that neither passengers nor mails came through to Cambridge for four days. On Friday this isolation from the outside world was broken by means of a launch which is now being.run between Pokeno and Ngaruawahia. Some symptoms of acute rheumatism are, a feeling of coldness; want of appetite ; thirst; and sharp pains in the joints.
