At the meeting of the Waipa County Council on Tuesday, the overseer reported as follows on the Cambridge bridge:— “The job appears to have made slow progres and is yet a good way from completion ; at the same time due allowance must be made for the troublesome, and in some parts, dangerous nature of the work. Since the job has been in progress there has been ample proof of the wisdom of the engineer’s recommendation not to have the work done by contract, as endless difficulties would have cropped up. These have, one after another, been got over, and I do not think that after all the cost will exceed the estimate.” Mr H. J. Greenslade, M.H.R., received the following communication ‘from the Postmaster-General (Sir. Joseph Ward) : —“ I have now the honor to reply to your letter on the 25th September last, enclosing a letter frbm Mr B. M. Savage and others ; to the telegram to you of the sth .October from Mr Veale ; to the representatives of the deputation introduced by you to the Hon. Mr McNab.at Hamilton on the 28th November last; and to your letter of the 10th ult. enclosing one from Mr M. E. Gardner. The Acting Post-master-General decided in May last that the new post office building at Cambridge was to be erected on the present site, and I regret that it is now too late to consider the advisability of changing the site. J may remark that if the agitation is to be continued, the erection of the building may have to be postponed indefinitely.”

A largely-attended meeting of householders was held at the Cambridge West Hall last night, when the proposal to form a town district was discussed at length. Mr C. Jarrett occupied the chair. Mr R. Fisher, chairman of the Pukekura Road Board was present, and replied to a large number of questions. A good deal of interest was taken in the proceedings, and at times there was a lot of good-natured banter. In order to test the feeling of the meeting, Mr Geo. Daily, juor., proposed that the petition in circulation in favor of forming a town district for Cambridge West, be annulled. . This was seconded by Mr J, Kingdon. Mr F. Mack proposed an amendment that the petition be gone on with. Seconded by Mr J. Jarrett, and carried by 15 to 11. Several abstained from voting. Owing to pressure on our space, we are compelled to hold over our report. A counter petition against the proposal is being circulated.
