THE ’FRISCO STEAMERS. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, This Day. Mr Cockcroft, general passenger agent of the Oceanic Company, who is en route to San Francisco, interviewed regarding the American Subsidies Bill, expressed surprise at the cabled report of its probable rejection, as Mr Cannon, Speaker of the Congress, had been under the impression, he said, that the Bill would go through. Still, he thought the measure would be earned. Asked how the rejection of the Bill would affect the San Francisco line, Mr Cockcroft replied ‘he did not know, and could not say anything on the subject. CHARGE AGAINST A CHEMIST. Wellington, Yesterday. Inspector Ellison has received advice from Pahiatua, stating that Arthur H. Ridd, chemist of Pongaroa, was arrested on Tuesday, and charged with a serious offence against a girl. A remand of the case was granted until the 16th inst., bail being allowed, accused in £2OO and two sureties in £2OO each. - CANTERBURY HARVEST. Christchurch, This Day, The harvest and pastoral reports from the North and Mid-Canterbury are not bright and the crops are likely to be very light and pastures far from satisfactory.

The Harbour Board’s annual returns will, this year, constitute a record in the history of the province. Almost every head of revenue shows a substantial incraase. SHORTAGE OF WATER. Dunedin, This Day. Owing to shortage of water,, some cityfoundries had to discontinue work this morning,
