A WIDOW’S CAPRICE.

REFUSES TO SIGN HER NAME IN MARRIAGE REGISTER.

Mme. Lina Favre, a pretty, rich, and wilful widow, has given the Swiss authorities much trouble.

Sometime ago she married Charles Meignier, a tradesman, of Lausanne, at the registrar’s office, but after the ceremony refused to sign her name in the register. On her “husband” remonstrating with her, the widow left him and returned to Yverdon.

As the registrar wished to know whether Lina Favre, not having signed the register, is legally married or not, he applied to the Courts, and the judges decided that the marriage was a legal one.

It is now announce that Charles Meignier has fallen in love with another girl, and has applied to the Courts to find out, “ whether he is really married or not,” as he wants a divorce, in order to marry again. The Lausanne authorities have to solve the problem whether they can order the wilful widow to sign the register, and, if she again refuses, take action against her for contempt of court. The only reason Lina Favre gives for her action is that she prefers her name to that of Meignier.
