The Rev. P. J. Mairs (of Hamilton) and Mr A. Jamieson (of Hautapu), left yesterday morning to attend the Primitive Methodist Conference at New Plymouth. Good headway is being made with the erection of the local municipal gasworks, and it is expected the concern will be in full running order in the course of a couple of months. Patrick and Thomas Crosby were charged at the Hamilton Police Court on Saturday with assaulting a man named Patrick O’Shea on December 6th. After taking evidence, the accused were committed for trial, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SO each.

Farmers at this season of the year are experiencing a very busy time, harvesting being in full swing throughout the district. It is reported that in most cases the quality and quantity of the grain is fully up to that of previous years. In connection with the septic tank trouble Mr Hugh Fitzgerald, appointed by the Borough Council to visit all properties and request persons connected with the sewer not to use it until the nuisance was abated, desires us to state that the appointment was conferred upon him without his authority and he never intended at any time to 'accept the position, as his time is fully occupied with other duties. The list of subscriptions towards the clock funds, which appears in another column, has beeu subscribed to without any canvassing. Further lists have now been prepared, and will be issued, alterwards a special canvas will be made. Now is the time, gentle reader, to show your true feeling towards the town and district you live in, and in the w'ords of Cbas. Spurgeon, “ Come down with the dust.” During the past few days, the Waikato river has risen fully two feet, and had a very discolored appearance, something like it was after the Tarawera eruption in June, 1886. The surface at times was covered with pumice stone and foam, the change being probably due to warm rains on the mountains at its source melting the snow, which brought down with it more debris than usual. The river is now getting bright and clear and at about its summer level. / Cyclists will be interested in Messrs E. Reynolds and Company’s change advertisement, which appears in another column. For the month of January only, the firm are making great reductions in the usual prices of bicycles and accessories. The goods can be supplied at the same prices by the Company’s agents and depot throughout the Colony. Messrs E. Reynolds and Co., moved into their new head office building, on January Ist. This fine four storey structure is situated in Victoria-street, Wellington, and is said to be the largest warehouse occupied by any cycle firm in the colony, which shows the growth of the firm’s business.

The prize list of the interesting and popular Show held by the Waikato Central Agricultural Association at Victoria Park in March next is now available. The programme is one of the most liberal in the Auckland province—prizes amounting to over dGBOO being offered. The stock sections have been carefully revised and several important classes added to the list, and in the produce and cooking classes numerous additions have been made, especially for the children. We notice that the Cambridge 5000 Club offers a points prize in the cooking classes in addition to the usual liberal prizes for the various classes. The schedules are now available and may be had on application to Mr E. Yeale, the Secretary. Professor Bates, the Wild West showman, had an exciting experience in the Te Awamutu district the other day. He had handled several cattle successfully and the next to come along was a stag. He was roped and thrown, and on his release was mounted by the Professor, who rode him some distance and then threw himself flat on the ground. The animal turned savage and rushed the prosprate man, who, as usual, retained his presence of mind and rolling under the beast’s nose he secured a place of safety between the head and the forefeet. The animal tried hard to gore him, and succeeded in bruising him considerably, but not seriously. By this time Captain Reynolds had dashed up on horseback, and drawn the attention of the beast, which at once made for him and did not trouble the Professor any further. The escape was a narrow one, but the principal actor makes light of the affair, and says this is not the first time he has dodged a savage animal in a similar manner.

As a result of Miss Gertie Campion’s stay in the Maungakawa Sanatorium, she is quite recovered in health, though it will be impossible for her to take the stage again. A concert is being promoted, to take place in Auckland on Thursday next, the proceeds of which are to be applied to placing Miss Campion and her sister in a little business in that city.
