The seismograph at the Observa- ' tory recorded severe earthquake shocks on January 2nd and 4th, INTER-STATE CRICKET. Sydney, January 7. New South Wales, in their second innings against South Australia, made 573 runs. Wright secured 6 wickets for 209, L. Hill 2 for 53. South Australia, in their second innings, lost 5 wickets for 185 runs— Mayne 38, Colling 34, Claxton (not out) 29. SENSATIONAL OCCURRENCE. I A BRAYE WORKMAN. (Received January 8. 10.12 a.m.) Perth, January 8. A sensational occurrence took place at the Ravensthorpe smelter. Two explosions occurred. The first blew away a few pieces of piping; it also exploded in the fore hatch. The ' men working in the vicinity made a rush to get away. One, named Townshend, however, remained and shut off the water, recognising the ex- ' treme danger of water reaching the inside of the furnace. This gallant' feat probably saved the whole of the - works from being blown to pieces! The property was seriously damaged, but no one was injured. WARNING TO WORKERS. SYDNEY, January 8.
