ALAS! THOSE CHIMES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l have read Cr. O’Toole’s letter re the criminality of giving or voting to the proposed clock and “ wearing a gold ring when he owes his butcher and baker.” Possibly if it were something to benefit himself or interest him a little more, such a person (who gives a little to a town monument) would not be thought such a great criminal. No doubt it seems a lot of money for such a purpose, but we should remember the Government is providing the tower and half the cost of the clock, which will make Cambridge a more noted place, more convenient, and, with other improvements (gas, etc.), a more pleasant place to live in. Is Mr O’Toole a member of the 5000 Club ? I should think not. Later on, we might not get such a good offer. I consider we are favored. Cr O'Toole speaks of crowing over some sister town. Now, every borough should (and many do) make their town more attractive, not only to themselves but visitors also, by their special energies. Whilst they are gaining in population and popularity others are remaining dormant and their towns uncared for. If the people choose to subscribe the £2OO now required for that purpose, it should prove they are satisfied and wish it. If they don’t,, it will satisfy Mr O’Toole. When this councillor had a business in Duke-street I heard him say: The Public Hall site was the uest and he would support it. Now he alters his tone, and with “ Farmer ” designates the present site as “ that hole.” I venture to assert that the people of Cambridge West, where perhaps the majority of farmers live, will hear the chimes as well from that so-called “ hole ” as from the further site. I have no fear that the money will be raised.—l am, etc., A Guinea.
