The question of rating on unimproved values was mentioned by Mr C. Reid, and briefly discussed by the Council of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night. It was stated that the system was in operation in sixty towns in New Zealand and benefical results had followed wherever it had been given a fair trial. Mr Reid said that Mr J. S. Bond and J. A. Young, of Hamilton, had expressed their willingness to visit Cambridge and give particulars of the working of the system in Hamilton. The meeting, however, whilst admitting that the question was a very important one, did not think it advisble to take any steps to have it further discussed at present, being of opinion that the ratepayers had plenty of other things to engage their attention just now. At the committee meeting of the Maungatautari Sports Club, on Thursday evening, a considerable amount of business was transacted, the principal matter engaging attention being the drawing-up of the programme. After considerable discussion a list was arranged of 22 events, attaching to which is prizemoney to the value of nearly £6O, an increase over last year of about £2O. The principal event is the Cup, of £lO. Athletes, too, have been well looked after in the way' of races and field events, while many items have been included eluded that should provide amusement and excitement for spectators, such as wrestling and tug-of-war on horseback, etc. The committee is to be commended for its enterprise in undertaking ameeting in every way far ahead of last year’s effort.
